Ondřej Grycz
I design the hardware behind industrial data: sensors, electronics and embedded systems that measure reliably in demanding environments, from signal conditioning to processing on the device.
Ph.D., Department of Industrial Systems Management, Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Research
Good data starts at the sensor. I work on the measurement chain, from the physical quantity to a trustworthy value on a screen or in a model, and on hardware that keeps working in real factories.
The topics below are only a selection of what I work on. Every machine, process and dataset is unique, so I gladly take on problems that are not listed here, even when the solution is not yet clear.
Sensors and data acquisition
Selection and integration of vibration, temperature, current, pressure and acoustic sensors, chosen and configured for a specific machine or process.
Electronics and PCB design
Custom boards with signal conditioning, designed around the measurement task instead of adapting the task to off-the-shelf modules.
Embedded systems and firmware
Firmware for microcontrollers and single-board computers that collects and pre-processes data, so devices keep working independently in harsh industrial environments.
Edge computing
Data processing and machine learning models running directly on devices, close to the data source, for real-time response and less data to transmit.
Industrial and IoT communication
Connecting devices to existing systems through OPC UA and Modbus as well as MQTT, LoRaWAN and BLE, including data from older machines.
Test and measurement instruments
Purpose-built instruments for testing, such as programmable waveform generation for pre-compliance EMC immunity testing in automotive applications.
Measurement quality for machine learning
Sampling, calibration, synchronisation and sensor placement decide whether models built on the data can be trusted. I work with machine learning colleagues so that hardware and analysis are designed together.
Team
Our group is part of the Department of Industrial Systems Management, which combines automation and industrial IT with the management, economics and ecology of industrial companies.

Collaboration
We are open to collaboration in many forms: joint research and projects, shared experiments and data, co-authored publications, studies, prototypes and pilot projects. Our scope is broad, and we are happy to work with both academic partners and companies.
Academic partners
Joint research and project proposals, shared experiments and data, co-authored publications and exchange of ideas across disciplines.
Companies
Studies, prototypes and pilot projects tailored to your process and equipment, from sensors, custom electronics and data acquisition to edge devices and data analysis.
The topics listed on this page are only a part of what we do. Every machine, process and dataset is unique, so we gladly take on problems that are not described here, even when the solution is not yet clear.
Write to me at ondrej.grycz@vsb.cz and I will gladly go through everything with you. No question is a bad question, so send whatever you have, even a rough idea.
